{"id":12969,"date":"2018-03-21T08:04:48","date_gmt":"2018-03-21T13:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/?p=12969"},"modified":"2018-06-21T09:19:25","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T14:19:25","slug":"guns-vs-children-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/guns-vs-children-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Guns vs. Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It makes me angry that I live in a country where some people love their guns more than they love their children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The massacre of seventeen innocent children and teachers in Parkland, Florida has sparked a debate which has found children standing up to elected officials and the gun lobby, demanding gun safety and reform.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the most absurd ideas is arming teachers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That teachers, in addition to all their other responsibilities, must worry about keeping their students safe from intruders with guns by \u201cpacking heat.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That in our own state a person running for Congress is giving away an AR-15 as a prize!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since Sandy Hook in 2012, there have been 239 school shootings nationwide; 438 children and teachers were shot, 139 were killed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Who are we?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is wrong with us?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How did guns become so deeply embedded in our\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12967 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-800x1067.jpg 800w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3845.jpg 3024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>culture?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I grew up in a small Midwestern town.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My father was a hunter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My brother, too.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The rite of passage for boys was a BB gun at age 8, a .22 caliber rifle by age 12 followed by a .410.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My childhood was<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>spent playing Cowboys and Indians, wearing a toy six-shooter on my hip and riding around the neighborhood on a stick horse shooting bad guys.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My heroes were Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The photo above is of me and my friend Deanna Stevens.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We had been riding the range all morning and paused just long enough to fill our canteens when someone snapped this picture. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Keith grew up in Texas also riding the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>range with double pearl-handled six shooters at the ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Where did we get this warped idea that guns were ok?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>From westerns and television?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Have we sugarcoated our past so we<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>don\u2019t have to face the fact that we committed genocide against 100 million indigenous people <\/span><span class=\"s1\">and brought slaves to this country to build our infrastructure?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Is that what we do in this country, sugarcoat our past so we can live with ourselves?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fast forward to the present. Does the second amendment really give us license to carry military grade weapons? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Constitutional scholars say it does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My grandson is now a freshman at Free State High School and is deciding what courses he will take next year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For his history course, he wants to take Native American History and Black American History, but has been told that if he does, those history courses will not qualify him to attend a four-year college; they are electives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The required history courses are European History and World History.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of studying history from the point of view of the vanquished, we must study from the point of view of the victors?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is this why we are so in love with guns because we never study the real history of this country?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why don\u2019t we study Howard Zinn\u2019s book <\/span><span class=\"s2\">The People\u2019s History of the United States<\/span><span class=\"s1\">? Or Leonard Pitts\u2019 book <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Freedom<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> about what happened after the Emancipation Proclamation?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or at the least integrate the struggle and accomplishments of countless marginalized populations?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How did corporate interests become more important than the will of the people?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Isn\u2019t it time to get rid of the Supreme Court decision Citizens United which allows monied interests to control our lives and the lives of innocent children?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our grandchildren have a way of shining a light into our lives and making us see the world differently.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just as those students in Parkland who courageously spoke truth to power, standing up against a system that allows the NRA to force schools into becoming battlegrounds and children to die at the hands of young men carrying high-powered guns that can kill 17 innocent children in 6 minutes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They say, \u201cEnough is enough.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Enough is enough indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are a number of walk-outs and marches planned across the country.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Something on a massive scale has to be done.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No matter how many safety procedures we implement, without a drastic change in our laws and seismic shift in our thinking, this will happen again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And again.
