Remember, only a few feet away is a busy parking lot. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Not<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>allowing your child to run ahead<\/b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Safety first at arrival and departure. Children who run away from parents, or are allowed to return to the classroom are looking for boundaries. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When this happens, just scoop your child up and say, \u201cIt\u2019s time to go!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Waiting Outside The Classroom<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">When you are working on a project, do you like to be interrupted?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is much the same for young children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the greatest gifts we can give children is time and a place to concentrate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If one can concentrate, one can learn, so we protect the toddlers and primary children from interruptions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A Montessori classroom by design is a busy place as children go about their tasks, but the presence of adults by their mere size can be a distraction causing some to stop what they are doing, especially if those adults are parents.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One never knows the great work that is about to unfold. If a child is distracted at the \u201cAh ha\u201d moment, he may not return to that particular work that day, or at all. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is why we ask parents to wait patiently at the door.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But take heart. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the wonderful things children learn in a Montessori school is how to serve a guest.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Watch the classroom newsletter for the announcement that your child\u2019s class is ready to accept visitors, and sign up to be a guest.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is nothing more fun, and you never know,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>you might just have an \u201cAh ha&#8221; moment of your own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>3.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Every Move You Make, <\/i><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Every Breath You Take\u2026 <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Young children derive their security from order, routine and the consistency of the adults in their lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When a child starts attending a new school, it is common for him to react to the transition, often with tears.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some children cry right away while others wait for a few weeks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you are a parent of a child who is crying when you leave, have faith.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All will be well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">Keep in mind that we adults are key to how our children feel about change, and small, seemingly insignificant things can affect the process.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Years ago when I was teaching I had a student who was experiencing separation difficulties.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When the mother brought the child, she rarely cried, but when her father dropped her off, the flood gates opened.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But why?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The dad appeared to be doing everything right.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He didn\u2019t linger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He gave a sweet hug and a brief goodbye, but the tone of his voice as he said, \u201cGoodbye Kelsey\u201d sounded as if he were saying, \u201cOh, no, you\u2019re going to start crying aren\u2019t you?\u201d Sometimes the issue isn\u2019t the child\u2019s, but ours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">We adults send nonverbal signals young children read more easily and quickly than the words we say.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They also know all the buttons to push because they have installed many of them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Having a mission can sometimes build a bridge from home to school.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some ways to do that are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li11\"><span class=\"s1\">Sending food for the class pet, or flowers for the snack table.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li11\"><span class=\"s1\">Sending a breakfast item to eat at the snack table before work time begins. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li11\"><span class=\"s1\">Bringing something from nature such as a beautiful fall leaf to distract the child from the emotion of transition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">But you are key to a successful transition, too.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The most important thing you can do is relax and trust us.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you are relaxed and confident, your child will be too, and before you know it, life will be good.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.\u00a0 Quiet and Peacefulness Essential Montessori called the classroom a \u201cchildren\u2019s house,\u201d a warm and inviting place scaled to the child\u2019s size.\u00a0 Our job is to protect and nurture this special place.\u00a0 Please help us by\u2026.
