{"id":14028,"date":"2020-10-30T13:28:30","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T18:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/?p=14028"},"modified":"2020-12-29T13:50:59","modified_gmt":"2020-12-29T19:50:59","slug":"inspired-by-greta-thunberg-raintree-student-leads-weekly-protest-about-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/inspired-by-greta-thunberg-raintree-student-leads-weekly-protest-about-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspired by Greta Thunberg, Raintree student leads weekly protest about climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lauren Fox, Lawrence Journal World, October 30, 2020<\/p>\n<p>For over a year, 10-year-old Dylan Tenbrink has been standing outside Raintree Montessori School on Friday mornings, protesting about climate change with her sign, \u201cOur planet, our future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dylan, a fifth grader, became inspired to speak out about the climate after watching a short video about Greta Thunberg, the 17-year-old Swedish climate activist. \u201cShe had a really strong voice and she was able to be heard,\u201d Dylan said of Thunberg. \u201cShe had strong feelings about the climate, and I think that is pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-fusion-400 wp-image-14031\" src=\"http:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_4-400x499.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_4-200x249.jpg 200w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_4-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_4-400x499.jpg 400w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_4-600x748.jpg 600w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_4.jpg 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>This Friday morning, about 10 classmates joined Dylan for her protest, many holding signs \u2014 and some dressed in their Halloween costumes. (Dylan is going as Bob Ross this year, but she said she was planning to change after the protest. Last year, she addressed up as Thunberg.)<\/p>\n<p>Dylan\u2019s teacher, Ben Rumback, said Dylan\u2019s actions fit the school\u2019s philosophy. \u201cThe whole concept of Montessori education is to spark interest in the child and let them follow to their satisfaction,\u201d he said. \u201cSo Dylan was protesting all last year, every Friday, often alone, inspired by Greta Thunberg. And slowly kids started joining her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Raintree reopened after the COVID shutdown, Rumback said classrooms were shuffled and that Dylan was placed in his classroom with some new classmates who were \u201call inspired by her passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dylan\u2019s mom, Jamin Tenbrink, said she\u2019s proud of her daughter\u2019s commitment to the cause. \u201cI think it\u2019s good for her age to be that committed and dedicated to something that\u2019s important to her,\u201d Tenbrink said. \u201cShe wants to be vocal about her future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-fusion-400 wp-image-14030 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/raintreemontessori.org\/current\/rtr-current\/uploads\/2020\/12\/protestDylan_2.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Whereas Thunberg often misses school on Fridays to strike outside the Swedish Parliament, Tenbrink said she and Dylan made a joint decision that Dylan would protest every Friday, but prior to the start of school.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her school protests, Dylan also organized a climate strike on Saturday in South Park.
